The Green Initiative
It is a fact that there are environmental consequences of training and racing. For instance, we need to travel, which creates greenhouse gases.
What we eat, drink and purchase creates trash and produces waste. When thousands of people
get together those things can really add up and create a negative impact. Join us in turning that around!
The YWCA Women's Tri has taken the Pledge of Sustainability, sponsored by Athletes for a Fit Planet. For a 2010 baseline, we have committed to:
- Reducing paper waste
- Recycling
- Championing carpooling, public and alternative means of transportation
- Providing eco-friendly apparel
- Creating and participating in a shoe recycling program
- Not having plastic water bottles at the finish line
- Using online communications and marketing
- Offering optional carbon offsets for athlete travel
We'll share our progress on these objectives and how we (and you!) are meeting them. For more info on our green initiative, see the new Green Initiative page on the race website.
Faces of the Tri
Meet Pam Broz, our new Green Coordinator! Pam's first multi-sport event
was the YWCA Women's Triathlon in 2008. Inspired, she's competed in several other running and multi-sport events since then, but always felt bad about all
the waste they generated. "It just seemed like community events that support individual health could be healthier and more sustainable themselves,"
she says.
"Helping the YWCA Women's Tri go green is a small way for all of us to help make a big difference."
Minneapolis Duathlon Aug 29, 2010
Registration Closes April 7!
North America's Largest Duathlon closes registration in less than one week. Register now at www.teamortho.us. Duathlon RELAYS, OPEN 5K,
and TIME TRIAL are NOT Closing and will remain open longer. If you are recruiting friends and family to join you in a relay, you still have time! Every registrant in the Duathlon will receive a bike jersey in the mail by the end of April, including all members of relay teams, open 5K and Time Trial.
Team Ortho has generously shared a great amount of race equipment with the Women's Tri the past few years,
which makes a huge contribution to our athletic community's green effort. This event is 2 weeks after the Women's Tri, which gives you plenty of time to recover
and keep the fun going!
Training Article
Triathlon Training: Tackling a Sprint Triathlon
Presented by the Women's Orthopedic Center
(Second of a three-part triathlon prep series)
The following article is presented on behalf of Dr. Margarita Sevilla, Medical Director of the YWCA of Minneapolis Women's Triathlon, and the Women's Orthopaedic Center.
Knowing how to train will help you make the most of your time, enjoy the journey, stay motivated and remain injury-free.
Training for your first triathlon will greatly depend upon your current aerobic levels and goals. Most people can successfully and comfortably complete a sprint triathlon with 12 weeks of training 4-6 hours per week. If you think about how much time we spend watching TV, on the Internet or on the phone, 4-6 hours of training for a triathlon is a simple investment in your health, fitness and drive to meet a challenge!

FAQs
When will the training plan be sent?
Originally scheduled to be sent by mid-May (12 weeks out from the race), we are moving up the date to early April due to many requests!
If you want more info right away to help you get started, try www.beginnertriathlete.com or one of the many good books on the market such as
The Woman Triathlete by Christina Gandolfo or Triathlon 101 by John Mora. And read the training articles in the race newsletter!
What about the I Tri shirts?
See the shirt here. If you ordered an I Tri training shirt during registration, we will be mailing them to you in May. If you didn't order one during registration, you can still get one. Learn how.
When will the course be available?
Bike and Run course maps are now available on the Course & Venue page!
The transition area and swim will follow in the next few weeks. We expect to have all the information on the website by the end of April.
Thanks for your patience as we worked with the cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul to get the courses finalized.
