We're Moving to Minneapolis
The YWCA of Minneapolis is thrilled to announce we're moving the Women's Triathlon to Lake Calhoun in Minneapolis!
(See a picture of the beach!)
Why the Move?
Many of you commented in the survey that you liked Baker Park, but almost as many said they were torn that so many women were
left out of the race.
Baker Park will always hold a warm place in our hearts and the history of the race.
However, we did have a few logistical issues including a slightly awkward transition area, bike paths, traffic flow,
and parking. And to help manage the park experience for all their users, Baker Park required us to cap the race at 500. As many of you know, we reached that cap months in advance in both 2008 and 2009.
The desire to provide access for more women is really the driving force for the move.
It is at the heart of why we are doing
the race. Coming to Minneapolis will allow more women to participate.
We loved Baker Park and the supportive environment and camaraderie that have set this race apart the past two years. We are confident that we will be able to preserve that special experience and continue to enhance the race in Minneapolis.
Moving the event to Minneapolis was a better fit for
the YWCA as an organization as well. As YWCA President and CEO Becky Roloff put it, "This is the community that the YWCA of Minneapolis serves, and where we have been empowering women and girls for the past 118 years. We are excited to bring this race home and show off the beauty of the Minneapolis parks and Chain of Lakes area."
Please feel free to send us your thoughts and comments at triathlon@ywcampls.org.
We look forward to celebrating your strength August 15 at Lake Calhoun. Tri on!
